Legislators have reformed Thrace-Tailteanns judicial branch since the foundation of the state. The former system of a Civil Court and a Criminal Court, below a High Court, was not suitable for a population numbering in the hundred millions. Our nations low rate of crime allows us to run a highly efficient system based around civil law. The new system starts in the District Courts, which hear civil cases only. Each District Court serves two hundred thousand citizens; at time of writing, there are about 7,000 District Courts in the country. About fifty District Courts report to each Regional Court; this hears civil and criminal cases, as well as appeals from the District Court. There are 155 Regional Courts. The High Court hears only appeals from the Regional Court and serious criminal cases. It sits in the capital and has seventeen courtrooms. The Supreme Court has three courtrooms in the capital. It hears only appeals from the High Court and constitutional cases. Supreme Court justices are directly elected. They serve for a five-year term as long as they are of sound mind and have not committed a serious crime. All other members of the judiciary are selected by the Senate and serve for life under similar terms. Judges to the District and Regional Courts are recruited from the district or region to the greatest extent possible. The current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is AV Quinn, best known for his recent ruling on the Legalise Euthanasia proposal at the United Nations General Assembly. |
